The term Kantha refers to a type of embroidery traditionally found in South East Asia, particularly in the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha and in Bangladesh. Kantha stitching is an up-cycling technique, using old saris—layering them atop each other and joining them through Kantha stitching—to create quilts, cushions and throws.
In these places, it has been a tradition for generations, and for many women, an heirloom to pass down to children and grandchildren.
There is a saying, ‘When away from home, the Kantha is remembrance of my mother because it is as soft as her arms which have comforted me in the past.’
